100 Top Picks for Homeschool Curriculum
By Cathy Duffy |
|
Well-known author Cathy Duffy offers advice for Christian homeschoolers to choose curricula in 100 Top Picks for Homeschool Curriculum. She begins by encouraging parents to be goal-oriented rather than curriculum-oriented. Homeschooling parents should determine how each child needs to learn and how those needs fit in with the family before choosing curricula.
Using a workbook format, parents write answers to questions and use rather complex charts to compare preferences to the approaches of traditional, Charlotte Mason, classical, unit study, unschooling, independent study, eclectic, and umbrella school. Additional factors such as budget, religious perspective, confidence level, and time constraints are discussed.
Next, Mrs. Duffy shares her familiar learning styles characters -- Wiggly Willy, Perfect Paula, Competent Carl, and Sociable Sue. Through these extreme examples, she challenges parents to consider whether each child is an auditory, a visual, or a kinesthetic learner, or some combination of these.
After considering all the factors, the parent should set goals for learning. These goals can be based on standards, but the author encourages parents to rely less on government-defined levels and more on helping the child reach his/her potential by realizing that children bloom at different times. After goals are set, the parent should revisit progress periodically and fill out the end-of-year form that is provided.
Mrs. Duffy lays out a huge chart showing the 100 products reviewed with ratings as to how they fit into learning styes, educational approaches, and religious preference. With the information determined from earlier chapters, the parent looks at the chart and decides which products might be a good fit. Then she reads the reviews which include an overview of the product, its price, and where to buy it.

High School Handbook, The
By Mary Schofield |
|
Why quit homeschooling after the elementary grades? Why cease training them at home when your children are maturing intensively in the areas that should concern us the most: their worldviews, emotions, spiritual walks, and reasoning skills? Why should the fear of advanced math, British literature, or chemistry become an obstacle to teaching junior or senior highers at home? Before you relinquish your key hourly influence on your teens to some other form of schooling, please consider Mrs. Schofield`s helpful and inspiring handbook. She provides encouragement on establishing your family`s educational philosophy and goals, setting requirements for the year and for graduation, evaluating progress, designing courses (geared for your student), and so much more. Her explanations of how to maintain course descriptions, track credits, and make transcripts are wonderfully manageable. And she exhorts you to see how independent learning projects, work activities, and apprenticeships can readily qualify as school. Moreover, she supplies reproducible master sheets of many of her documents (for credit tracking, yearly goals, etc.), and even makes suggestions of reading material and subject categories that can count toward graduation requirements. Plus, it all comes from a godly perspective. Mrs. Schofield continually returns us to the Scriptures for faith and wisdom - recommending prayer for every major (and minor) decision regarding your child`s life. Schooling the upper grades can (and should) be tremendously exciting and challenging...but Mrs. Schofield`s book makes it a whole lot less daunting. |

Home Educated and Now Adults
By Brian D. Ray, PhD |
|
For nearly 20 years, critics and the curious have been asking about the homeschooled: But how will they do in the real world of adulthood? As a corollary, they have also asked: What about socialization? This unique study takes a look at the lives of over 7,000 adults from across the United States who were home educated during their elementary and secondary school years.
The purpose of this study was to describe and gain more understanding about these adults. In particular, the focus was on their general demographics, attitudes toward their own home-education experiences, and successes in life. Success was evaluated with respect to civic, social, educational, employment, and worldview traits. The target population was all adults in the United States who had been home educated, regardless of whether thought positively or negatively about having been homeschooled. A written survey (questionnaire) and follow-up interviews were used to gather information about the participants.
This full-length research report addresses the following topics regarding the participants, the first wave of adults who were educated as a part of the modern homeschool movement:
Homeschool background Family history Post-secondary educational and other history Civic involvement and learning, current events, style of living Thoughts about life, marriage, educational plans, and so forth Work, employment, household income Household, family, children, Beliefs and worldview Demographics Various other items
This unique comprehensive report, based on a long-awaited study, will answer many of the questions that you have had about homeschoolers and how they are doing in adult world. |

Homeschool Support Group, The
A Handbook for Christian Leaders
By Camilla Leedahl |
|
Ideas for starting and maintaining a Homeschool Support Group. How do you pass on all the experience a support leader gains over time as they direct the day to day business of a busy homeschool support group? It would be nice if there was some way to do a file transfer from experienced leader to new leaders. Camilla Leedahl has done the next best thing by covering the many aspects of leading a homeschool support group in The Homeschool Support Group: A Handbook for Christian Leaders.
The Homeschool Support Group was written in response to overwhelming requests for a handbook Camilla helped write for the North Dakota support group. She has revised the original format of that handbook to make it applicable to support groups nationwide.
To allow you to see the scope of information she presents, I'm including the table of contents from the book. Each topic is thoroughly covered. For example in the section entitled "Lightening Your Load Through Delegation" the following concerns are covered: why delegate, to whom should you delegate, levels of delegation, what if it didn't work, what to delegate, what not to delegate and thank you's. Camilla and several other homeschool leaders offer sound advice grounded in actual experience.
When dealing with some of the more controversial aspects of leading a support group, she offers pros and cons for a variety of positions. For example, she discusses the advantages and disadvantages of having exclusive or inclusive groups, and whether groups should have a statement of faith.
The Homeschool Support Group is a primer for all those desiring positions of leadership in their local or state homeschool groups. |

Joshua Generation, The
By Michael Farris |
|
Michael Farris makes a call to action in his book, The Joshua Generation. Drawing a comparison between our times and those of Moses and Joshua, he refers to homeschooling parents as the "Moses generation," people who left Egypt (the public school system) but have not reached the Promised Land. The "Joshua Generation," homeschooled children, must "take back the land" by turning our country back to the standards and values of the Founding Fathers.
Stressing that homeschooled students are destined for leadership in the United States, the author discusses some of the problems with education today. Ivy League universities once had the goal of forming a well-rounded, wisdom-seeking person with a love of God and country. Current schools stress humanism; and colleges and universities are loaded with ultra-liberal professors who hammer students with their beliefs presented as facts. Textbooks are frequently inaccurate and slanted to the political left. History texts, in particular, represent the United States as an evil nation with misguided principles. Even the most well-grounded Christian student will be affected when surrounded by this onslaught of material.
Michael Farris uses a powerful comparison between our times and those of Moses to illustrate his point that we CAN turn the tide of liberalism and secularism in our country. The Joshua Generation is an excellent book to motivate and provide direction for homeschooling families whose children aspire to leadership. It is a "must read" for parents of college-bound students.

Slow and Steady, Get Me Ready
By June Oberlander |
|
The first five years of a childs life are the most formative and critical. SLOW AND STEADY GET ME READY is for those genuinely interested in helping children get a good start in life so that they will not be left behind! These children will some day be the leaders of the future. LEARNING BEGINS AT BIRTH! Research on brain development has shown that any attempt to maximize intellectual growth must begin the first three years of life; the younger the child, the stronger the effect. Beginning education at age five is too late! SLOW AND STEADY GET ME READY is a highly recommended early childhood developmental parenting resource that tells you when, how and what skills to develop, provides an inexpensive phonetic approach for reading and spelling, contains a complete readiness curriculum full of ideas, enriches the parent child bond with close interaction and develops preschool skills, painlessly and in proper order. It only takes only about ten minutes for each activity. SLOW AND STEADY GET ME READY was divinely inspired and is based upon Mark 9:36-37. Jesus taught his disciples to welcome children. This was a new approach in a society where children were usually treated as second-class citizens. Unfortunately, children are often still regarded as second-class citizens around the world. We hope that by interacting with them closely in an appropriate manner, as recommended in this book, parents will realize children are their most precious asset and will treat them accordingly. |

The Lord Builds the House- The 127th Psalm
By Illustrated byJohannah Bluedorn |
|
The 127th Psalm has never looked so beautiful. Trivium Pursuit is pleased to announce the release of their newest children's picture book The Lord Builds the House: The 127th Psalm by Johannah Bluedorn. 40 original paintings create stunning, colorful windows on every line of the Psalm, which begins "Except the Lord build the house, they labor in vain that build it." In Johannah Bluedorn's rich vision, each verse of the Psalm is illustrated with a portrait of "sumptuous simplicity": farm and wild animals celebrate the bounty of nature; the beauty of family; the achievements of builders, bakers, and book authors; and the miracle of God's protection. The book makes the Psalm accessible to very young children, and reminds adults of God's provision for animals as well as for His people. |
